Writing with a moral can feel childish, ineffective. But writing without purpose can feel empty. That’s where fables come in. A fable is a lesson wrapped in wonder. It’s talking animals and it’s tricksters and tyrants. It’s a forest with a memory or memory without an owner. It’s simple on the surface and sharp underneath. We want cunning and consequence and mercy and mischief and justice. We want beauty and grace and darkness and revelation. As always, wow us. Thrill us. Never bore us. We’re eager to read your best. Deadline 4/15.

Full guidelines here: https://sequestrum.org/fable-theme.

Submissions should generally not exceed 12,000 words. If you have a great piece which you think is a good fit and exceeds these guidelines, send it. Simultaneous submissions accepted. Include a brief bio in your cover letter to be used as a contributor bio in the event of publication. Your name should not appear anywhere on your manuscript. No previously-published material.

Romance gets a bad wrap. It’s a spark as well as a flame. It’s tenderness and it’s risk. It’s the glance across a crowded room and the quiet familiarity of shared mornings. It’s where we lose and reinvent ourselves. It’s kindness in an increasingly cruel world. That’s what we’re after. We want stolen kisses and missed chances and grand gestures and small, sacred moments. We want beauty and grace and heartbreak and healing and devotion that endures. As always, wow us. Thrill us. Never bore us. We’re eager to read your best. Deadline 4/15.
